It's no secret that there are many great bookstores and bars in Los Angeles. Luckily, many are within walking distance from each other. A mere two blocks away from The Last Bookstore -- a brief five minute walk up W. 5th Street and a quick right on S. Hill Street -- is Perch, a rooftop bar with beautiful views of downtown Los Angeles and French-inspired décor. With literary-inspired libations and gorgeous views, I can't think of a better place to kick back and relax after a trip to The Last Bookstore.
Perch is one of those tucked-away bars you might walk right past if you didn't know it was there. A small plaque with "Perch" in gilded letters is a bespoke marker for the entrance to a lobby of elevators. Take an elevator to the thirteenth floor, which is fittingly denoted by a simple silhouette of a bird, to access the rooftop bar.
With names like Hemingway on the Beach, Lolita, Writer's Block (pictured), and My Fair Lady, it was challenging for me to order just one cocktail. The drinks are pricey, but the view is worth it. Besides, if you exercise restraint in the $1 section at The Last Bookstore, you'll have a little extra cash to drop on overpriced drinks anyway.
On the rooftop, inviting colorful couches, sweeping views and a beautifully tiled patio create a stylish yet casual atmosphere. Is it just me, or does this not look like the ideal spot to enjoy a cocktail and a good book?
One of life's greatest pleasures is a drink. Add a great skyline view, beautiful weather, live music, and you have the makings for an ideal Saturday afternoon that could only be made better with a quick trip to The Last Bookstore.
What about you? What bars do you love in Los Angeles? Any favorite places to grab a drink?
